How great to see a positive image of Latina youth and beauty getting some credit: Selena Gomez has just been named Glamour Magazine’s “Woman of the Year.”
It’s been a pretty big year for Gomez already. Wizards of Waverly Place was just the beginning; she’s had four single make it to #1 on the Billboard charts, she’s got at least a couple of movies coming out early next year (Spring Breakers, with James Franco and Vanessa Hudgens, and Aftershock, a horror/thriller based in Chile, co-written and co-starring horrormeister Eli Roth). And she was recently named UNICEF’s youngest ambassador, developing early childhood education in impoverished countries through a program called Programa Puede.
And still she was excited by the new honor, and the beautiful cover shoot. “Woman of the Year?” she told Glamour. “I didn’t even know I was a woman! I’m very honored…and it’s a very, very big deal to me. I’m going to hold it close to my heart.” And as always, she credits her strong family and especially her mother for her success: “It’s because of [my mom] that I can do things on my own,” she recently told Perez Hilton. “I like being professional. I like showing up on time. I like being good to people, and I know that I’m reflecting her at the end of the day.”
Woman of the Year indeed.
