There may be precious few Latinos in front of the camera when it comes to the big superhero blockbusters of the recent past, but Latinos are deeply involved behind the scenes–in special effects, camera work, stunts, and in the executive offices.
Victoria Alonso has served as executive producer on most of the major Marvel projects of the last few years. She began almost ten years ago in the visual effects field with companies like the (currently much beleaguered) Rhythm and Hues, as visual effects producers on movies like The Core, Cats & Dogs, and Kingdom of Heaven. Born in Argentina, Alonso has been part of Latino Hollywood since the turn of the century. Her first full producer role was for the original Iron Man movie, where she was still responsible for special effects. Since then she’s been knee-deep in the “Marvel Phase 2” movies, like Iron Man, Thor, and The Avengers, and it isn’t over yet: you’ll see her name on this year and next year’s super-projects, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain American: The Winter Soldier and even The Guardians of the Galaxy.
CineMovieTV had a short and interesting three-minute interview with her last year, as The Avengers was snapping up every free dollar in America. It offers us a relatively rare chance to see a successful Latina working hard–and successfully–on the other side of the camera.
