Bobby Cannavale has had an amazing run, from Emmy Awards for Will and Grace to Emmy nominations for Boardwalk Empire to a Tony Award nomination for The Motherfucker with the Hat, and his current Broadway run in the revival of Clifford Odets’ The Big Knife. Now he’s been signed by Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones to star in a new HBO drama pilot (formerly known as The History of Music) being directed by the legendary Martin Scorcese and written by Terence Winter–the same creative team that brought us Boardwalk Empire.
The Hollywood Reporter was the first to release info about the period drama, which has been in the works for years. It follows the exploits of a “cocaine-fueled record executive in New York City circa 1977, when punk, disco and a new form of music called hip-hop collided.”
The project is actually based on an idea from Jagger himself, who’s been shopping the project around Hollywood literally for decades. At various times it’s been at Disney and Paramount, and now it’s finally found a home at HBO. More casting news is yet to come, but one thing’s certain: Cannavale has completely and permanently joined Hollywood’ “A” List.
