Latina TV news reporter/interviewer/anchor Soledad O’Brien has never shied away from controversy. Whether she was one of the rotating hosts of NBC’s weekday and weekend Today programs, or in the lead on CNN’s American Morning from 2003 to 2007, or most recently as host of CNN’s Starting Point, she has always made a strong impression as bright, pointed, and pretty much fearless.
Since Starting Point was rebranded out of existence a few months ago, O’Brien’s been available…and now she’s reached an agreement to serve as a “special correspondent” for yet another controversial boss: Al Jazeera America, where she will contribute to the network’s flagship primetime show America Tonight. She will also produce documentary specials, and it looks as if she’ll also be appearing on HBO’s Real Sports and continue to produce documentaries for CNN.
“I look forward to beginning a relationship with Al Jazeera America, which has made a commitment to producing quality programming and pursuing underreported stories,” O’Brien said in a written statement. The exec director of Al Jazeera America was equally enthused: “O’Brien’s career producing and reporting on the human side of many of the most important stories of the past decade will fit in perfectly with what Al Jazeera America will be covering every day.”
Al Jazeera America will launch for real, replacing existing cable channel and Al Gore’s online TV/radio network CurrenTV, in August.
