Kyla Garcia is a hard-working Latina who’s doing her best to break into the business. She’s made some commercials, had a few roles, and maybe–just maybe–Twinkie Byrd’s 2013 Monologue Slam will be the big break she’s been looking for.
A native of Hoboken, a graduate of Rutgers, Kyla was chosen from a long list of applicants by casting director Twinkie Byrd (most recently the casting director of Fruitvale Station) for her Monologue Slam. Hosted in conjunction with the Hollywood Black Film Festival, this year’s Slam takes place on Saturday, October 5th at 7P at the W Hotel in Hollywood. You can get more information on the Slam right here.
“No matter what happens on Saturday, being selected to perform in the Monologue Slam is the true victory for me,” Kyla told SeFija! “Having this amazing opportunity to perform in front of one of the most respected casting directors in Hollywood, Twinkie Byrd, and the HBFF audience is a chance to share my art and do what I love. The moment I found out I felt like it was a sign to keep going…to keep moving forward on this path. It means everything to me to have this sort of exposure because I followed my dream 3,000 miles away from everything and everyone I know…and moments like this remind me that I am on the right track.”
You can see the monologue she used to audition right here (fair warning: NSFW!), and Kyla has more to say about how she got to this place in a vlog on her own YouTube Channel. You can also see what Kyla has to say on the SeFija! YouTube Channel by clicking the image below…
Good Luck to Kyla, and we’ll let you know how it all works out (or maybe Kyla will tell us herself!)
