Coming Next Week: Penélope Cruz in “Twice Born”

Released only in Italy a year ago, now going international on December 6, Penélope Cruz delivers a powerful performance as a single mother struggling to save her son.

Penélope Cruz has had an interesting year. She’s already been a major part of two films with major directors–Pedro Almodovar’s I’m So Excited that was released (and disappeared, for the most part) in June, and Ridley Scott’s The Counselor, with Michael Fassbender and so many Latino stars, just a couple of months ago. Now, very quietly, comes Twice Born, a film created in Italy in 2012, and pretty much unseen until now, where it will see limited release in the U.S. (and in most of the rest of the world) on December 6.

In it, she stars with Emile Hirsch in a film from award-winning director Sergio Castelitto (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and many episodes of In Treatment, among much more), who wrote the screenplay from Margaret Mazzantini’s novel. It tells the story of a single mother who brings her son to Sarajevo, where his father died in the Bosnian conflict years earlier, and struggles with her own memories and the legacy of war and tragedy her teenager child must endure. Two things are certain: it’s emotionally powerful and visually stunning. Here’s the trailer:
