A strong attempt at meaningful drama and a challenging documentary opening in theaters Friday January 24

Gimme Shelter with Rosario Dawson and Mercedes Sosa: The Voice of Latin America fill out a quiet week on the silver screen

I, Frankenstein, which we talked about here, is the big dog in Friday the 24th’s entries into theaters. But there are two others worth noting:

Rosario Dawson has a disturbing supporting role in Gimme Shelter, Vanessa Hudgens’ most recent attempt at being taken seriously, especially after Spring Breakers Word is she tries a little too hard and the script is a little to cliché, but it’s an earnest attempt at telling a serious story. Meanwhile, Mercedes Sosa, La Negra, is a legend when it comes to the Argentine folk music known as nueva cancion, and this documentary, Mercedes Sosa; The Voice of Latin America tells her remarkable story. It is in limited release beginning Friday, January 24.
