This talented Latino star is still rising; shooting on the thriller begins soon
It’s a harsh reality of modern Hollywood–Latino or otherwise–that getting a movie distributed is just as important–and sometime more difficult–than getting a movie made. It would take a Hollywood insider all of five minutes to come up with half a dozen quality projects that were fated to a week in half a dozen theaters and then the DVD/VOD track because they simply couldn’t get that deal.
That turns out not to be a problem for Oscar Isaac’s new film, A Most Violent Year. The new thriller, co-starring another hot name, Jessica Chastain, has already been acquired for domestic distribution by A24, a new and aggressive company that plans to make this a major release later this year.
The thriller is set in New York City in the winter of 1981, statistically one of the most violent years in the city’s history. The film follows the lives of “an immigrant and his family, trying to expand their business and capitalize on opportunities as the rampant violence, decay and corruption of the day drag them in and threatened to destroy all they have built.” We’re assuming that Isaac will be playing the immigrant–a welcome change from the white-white role as Llewyn Davis in his current award-winning film. But he’s likely to be strong in any event.
The distributor’s certainly high on it. “A24 has established itself as an innovative distributor that understands how to reach a large, diverse audience,” says its leader. They share the director’s “thrilling vision of 1980’s New York, featuring the extraordinarily talent of Oscar and Jessica.”
Filming begins soon in, of all places, New York City. It’s scheduled for release before the end of the year.
