Édgar Ramírez is one of many very talented people in Deliver Us From Evil, a new film about possession and faith that is clearly trying to reach beyond the standard summer “horror movie” fare. In this revealing conversation, you can get a real sense of how committed he became to this role as a priest struggling with his faith and the fate of a young woman battling what seems to be demonic possession.
Ramírez doesn’t see the priest as an unconventional person, but as a very common man, dealing with his own struggles and challenges–of course, in an extraordinary situation. He’s clearly thought long and hard about this character and his portrayal, and made it into something more than the common “priest superhero” character of most ‘possession’-related horror films.
