David Zayas the Guiding Light in Shine

David Zayas

Shine, “a story about family, community, culture, and standing up for what you believe in.”

We caught up with the super talent, David Zayas (Gotham, Dexter), who plays the pops (Ramon) in the film. His character is all about family, community and culture. Zayas, who loves to keep busy, talked to us about working on the film and what it meant to him. He even mentions what his next project he’s working on and you can listen in on it now. The film had some good things going for it. They did a good job in tying the importance of family, music, dance, and the love of ones neighborhood and culture. Even in the midst of gentrification.

It’s not a perfect film but what it’s missing you kind of over look it for what it does have. The film makes you want to get out of your seat and join the dancing on the screen—and who wouldn’t, while listening to some great Fania music. I’ll watch it again.

The story: Two Puerto Rican brothers, Ralphi Matas (Jorge Burgos) and Junior (Gilbert Saldivar), from New York’s Spanish Harlem and the street’s best Salsa dancers, are separated after a tragedy only to reunite years later on opposing sides of gentrification. The film also stars, Alysia Reiner (OITNB), written/directed by Anthony Nardolillo, and produce by Sandra Varona. — A.O.

Shine in theaters October 5.
