Latina on fire: Gina Rodriguez rides the wave

Filly Brown made a big, happy noise at Sundance, and it’s changed Gina Rodriguez’ life forever

There was a big front-page story in the Los Angeles Times Calendar section this week, all about Gina Rodriguez, the young, smart, super-energetic star of Filly Brown, the sweetheart of this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

This would be big news…if she hadn’t already been on the front page of USA Today, and all over the magazine shows, and snapped until she was blind on the red carpet at the SAG Awards. Take a look at her Facebook page, and you’ll see just how crazy-busy she’s been the last couple of weeks: she’s meeting with this producer, going on that audition, doing this talk show or that interview, and having her picture taken–over and over, her picture, her picture.

But Gina seems to be loving it all. Read that same Facebook page since Sundance hit and the wave crested, and you’ll see a charming mixture of awe, befuddlement, weariness and pure joy. Just a few days ago, before the stressful flight to L.A. and SAG, she said, “So blessed. Now it’s time to sit back with the people I love and reminisce on the moments God has given us.” And she told Amy Kaufman of the L.A. Times, “My dreams are coming true. To work so hard and get to a placce where people see you and are maybe going to give you the opportunity to do more? I mean, hey, call me the “it” girl. I’m all about it.”

We admit it, we play favorites now and then, and we’ve been watching Gina for a while now. We’ve never seen anyone work any harder than she and her friends have on Filly Brown.  If you want to see more of her, make her a Facebook friend – great pictures, and you’ll be the first to see what’s going to happen next. And you can get a glimpse of Filly Brown here.

Or you could rent Go For It, the dance movie she made just last year (though it seems a long time ago, now.) We’ll let you know when ‘her’ episode of Happy Endings or NCIS rolls around.  And you can read a very nice Q&A with IndieWire right here.

If we’re all lucky, we’ll get to see Filly Brown soon. Though it made quite an impression at Sundance, it still hasn’t found a distributor. But if Gina has anything to say about it–it will. And whatever fame and fortune comes to this particular young actress–well, it couldn’t happen to a nicer girl.
