From the Department of “What Were They Thinking?”: Life imitates art, Cuban style

We don’t usually cover anything remotely political here at Se Fija!. We leave that to our friends over on NewsTaco. But sometimes there’s a story that’s so crazy (and even has an entertainment hook’) that we can’t help mentioning it.

Three young Cubans did a pretty courageous thing a while back: Anailín de la Rúa de la Torre, Javier Núñez Florián and Dariel Arrechaga made a movie about three young Cubans building a raft to flee Cuban…and they made it in Cuba, inviting the displeasure of the slowly crumbling Castro regime.

It turned out to be a pretty good film–good enough to attract the attention of New York’s Tribeca Film Festival. And Cuban authorities–for some unknown reason–actually permitted the three young actors to leave the country long enough to attend the premiere in New York.

Bad idea.

Pretty much the moment the plane touched down on U.S. soil, two of the three actors—Torre and Florian—fled for parts unknown. “Only Dariel Arrechada attended,” said a spokesman for the festive. “We have not had any contact with Anailín de la Rúa de la Torre or with Javier Nunez Florian.”

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services are keeping quiet about the sudden disappearance (do we still call it ‘defecting?’) But a spokesperson did point out that people in similar situations that come to the U.S. for asylum have a year to apply.

Welcome to the U.S., Anailin, Javier. We hope you enjoy your stay. And…stay in touch.
