Kate del Castillo is one of those rare actresses who is well-recognized on both sides of the border. A prominent star of the Spanish-language La Reina del Sur, she also did a season on Weeds, has appeared on CSI Miami, and was one of the stars of last year’s under-noticed romantic comedy (of a sort), Without Men.
Now del Castillo is putting her celebrity to good use as a spokesperson for the first against human trafficking, by starring in a documentary called Invisible Slaves (Esclavos Invisibles) that will be shown as a series of spots in theaters and aired in its entirety on MTV Latinoamérica. Each of the spots will tell stories of people who were the victims of abuse in Mexico and Guatemala.
The spots are meant to send “a message to a young audience that will be able to see this problem more closely, raising their awareness that this is a serious problem that exists in our society and we should all be alert to spotting it,” organizers said.
“People trafficking affects all of us,” del Castillo told the Latin American Herald Tribune. “There is no doubt about it. It is harming our society every day and will continue to do so as long as we all do not work together to raise awareness, inform and protect the most vulnerable people in Mexico–children, young people and women.”
