Jon Huertas Talks Career Choices, Stereotypes, and So Much More in his Backstage interview

We’ve been big fans of Jon Huertas for years now. In fact, we did a profile on him back in September, when last year’s TV season was just getting under way. You can read that here. There’s a heck of a lot more to this actor/musician than his engaging, funny, and dramatic performance on ABC’s Castle for the last five years.

Journalist Jenelle Riley knows that; she just published a great profile of Huertas in Backstage, that talks about his earlier like in the Air Force, his online projects that continue to impress, and his early days in Hollywood.

Among the many interesting topics, Huertas talked about Hollywood 1995, and the compromises a young Latino actor had to make back in the day: “The way Hollywood was back then, I think they were just starting to develop projects with bigger roles for Latinos,” he says. ‘And I knew that you have to capitalize on what you are, who you are, early in the business, and just prove you’re hirable in this industry. I knew if I wanted to make a career out of this, I had to play the game. So I had to play certain Latino stereotypes sometimes, which I wasn’t always happy about.”

Huertas talks more about his childhood and education, his time in the Air Force, and–of course–his work on Castle. He also mentions The Box, a short film of his own that he wrote and co-directed.  Read the whole article here–it’s worth every paragraph.  She doesn’t talk much about Jon’s music career, but you can catch a glimpse of that as well. Just last month he uploaded “Waste Of Your Time” with Roc$tedy featuring Jon Huertas–we’re embedding that below–and you can buy the song on iTunes right here. He’s also a major Twitter dude; follow him at @Jon_Huertas.
