Aubrey Plaza is in “Pain”

Someday This Pain Will Be Useful To You doesn’t sound like a comedy, but Latina sensation Aubrey Plaza is just one of the reasons to watch this quirky little film, opening Friday Oct. 5

It’s hard to turn on the TV these days and not catch a glimpse of Aubrey Plaza somewhere. Parks and Recreation, the NBC sitcom that she’s been a part of for years, is back on the air with new episodes; she’s been winning entertainment awards right and left (including the “Young Hollywood” Award, where she notoriously said, “F** old people, I’m going to live forever.”), appearing on every talk show imaginable, and making a mark in independent films like Safety Not Guaranteed. Not bad for a woman whose first role in film was “woman with massive head wound” a mere six years ago.

The famously dour, deadpan persona that Aubrey displays on Parks and in some of her other work is a far cry from her own ebullient personality–the one we see on the talk shows. And the character she plays in Someday This Pain is like neither: a chirpy and entirely demented real estate agent in Edge, “voted the seventh best medium-sized small town in Cuyoga County.” Here’s a glimpse of her role…

What’s up next? Parks and Recreation is suffering in the ratings, but it’s almost certain to make it through the end of the calendar year; we’ll have to see what happens after that (the entire raft of Thursday night NBC sitcoms, including Parks and the redoubtable Office, are in trouble). But Aubrey’s certainly not going anywhere but up: she’s got two movies coming out next February, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swann III with Bill Murray and Mary Elizabeth Winstead and The To-Do List, from Funny or Die’s Mary Carey. And Safety Not Guaranteed will be released on DVD on October 30; it’s available for pre-order now.
