Joanna Garcia Swisher’s “Animal Practice” is Cancelled

Second show of the season to go, and the first of NBC’s beleaguered line-up, to get the axe

NBC had pretty high hopes for this sitcom–a kind of quirky Scrubs-like half-hour set in a veterinary hospital. And they upped the ante when they added JoAnna Garcia Swisher to the mix at the last minute. After all, Swisher has been the beneficiary of development deals or pilots at ABC and CBS already; she’s considered something of a hot ticket in TV-Q terms.

Ultimately, none of that mattered: Animal Practice joins CBS’ Made in Jersey as among the first to be pulled from the schedule after just a few episodes. It will be replaced by Whitney–a sitcom that surprised many by being renewed at all–beginning November 14. (This, in turn, puts the future scheduling of the cult fave Community into question: the Joel McHale ensemble comedy was supposed to re-premiere as an hour-long “comedy block” with Whitney sometime after the first of the year, and now…?)

For the moment, you can see all five episodes of Animal Practice that actually aired right here, on NBC.com. There are almost certainly a few more ‘in the can;’ we’ll see if NBC lets them out online or at all.
