Kirk Acevedo
Let’s get this straight: Kirk Acevedo is a good actor. We’ve all admired his work for years, and he’s been at this for a while. It was more than ten years ago that he first came to national attention in Band of Brothers; he was “Miguel Alvarez” on Oz shortly after that and is remembered for much more, including his work as a the D.A.’s investigator on Law & Oder: Trial by Jury and as Anna Torv’s brave but terribly unlucky partner in the first season of Fringe. He was a detective again on the short-lived Prime Suspect last year, and appeared most recently in an episode of The Mentalist.
But even good actors have to eat. Which is why you’ll find him headlining Collision Earth, one of SyFy’s notoriously awful disaster movies, available on DVD for under ten bucks this Tuesday.
What’s the plot:
When the sun converts to a magnetar for a short time, the planet Mercury is thrown out of orbit (along with a spaceship exploring it) and set on a collision course for Earth. Can a disgraced scientist manage to use his failed weapon system, Project 7, to save our planet?
One of his best and most challenging roles? Not really. As Acevedo himself said in a slightly different context, “There is a big difference between that and a network. But still I can’t complain. It’s better than doing a 9 to 5 any day.”
