Elizabeth Espinosa’s new CNN Latino show is terrific…but Only in Spanish

By Angela M. Ortíz

We’ve loved Elizabeth Espinosa as a newscaster and journalist on Los Angeles’ KTLA for years (the whole station has been a strong leader in Latinos in TV news for decades), so we were very pleased to hear that CNN premiered a non-cable program called Sin Limites with Espinosa as the host.

She covers a lot in her hour-long Monday-to-Friday show, from one-on-one interviews to group get-togethers. Some of her recent guests include actors/activists Edward James Olmos, Paul Rodriguez, and director Patricia Riggen.

It’s got to be a huge challenge for her. As Espinosa herself said in her Facebook account, “I’ve been going a hundred miles a minute…it’s the first time that CNN moves beyond cable. Ay Dios Mio! This is super exciting!”

And it is. How long this will last, nobody knows, and Espinosa promises she’ll be back on KTLA soon–“just taking a quick vacation to launch this ‘baby’, she says.

But the real question is…why is it in Spanish only? Here’s a woman who is completely, charmingly bi-lingual, who can appeal to the 50% of Latino viewers who prefer English and still want to see Latino subject matter. CNN is clearly high on the show; they’ve made it the flagship of their new venture and continue to push Espinosa as a major ‘find’ (Check out their complete and fascinating profile of Elizabeth and her show here.) The only obstacle preventing Espinosa and the show reaching the entire audience is its one-language approach, and that’s a shame.

You can catch Sin Limites Monday through Friday at 8-9P, though you may have to search a bit to find it on your local listings. It’s worth the search, and we wish Ms. Espinosa luck…but it really should be in English, and on a channel that most people can watch…
