In the course of a day or a week, we look at a lot of web sites, Twitterfeeds, and Facebook pages. And in the near future, we’re going to start building up our own “blogroll” to share those sources with you (in fact, if you have any ideas of what to add, drop us a comment!).
One of the Facebook pages we should have mentioned long ago is the wonderfully named I want to see more Latinos in Film & TV, created by “producer, writer, director, and autodidact” César Vargas, (that’s his own description).
This active and fascinating Facebook page is an individual and unique reaction to the same impulse that led us to start Se Fija!: the desire to see (or at least notice and follow) Latinos and Latino culture on screens of all shapes and sizes. Vargas, born and raised in the Dominican Republic, came to the U.S. at age 13. He graduated from Queens College, CUNY, wrote a fantasy novel, started the site, and is in the midst of prep for shooting several feature films. And he says, “If we change (by numbers and diversity of people and stories) how we’re portrayed, or lack of accurate portrayal, we can change the way the general population sees us and how we see ourselves: as three-dimensional human beings; not stereotypes.”
We couldn’t agree more. Take a look at the Facebook page here–we sure do!–and make it a habit to check back regularly. César is clearly one of the good guys in this ongoing exploration of Latino Hollywood.
