“A Dark Truth” Slips Out on DVD

It’s happened again: a strong, solid drama with Latinos at the center got a tiny theatrical release…and then wandered into an almost-unpromoted life on DVD.

This time it’s A Dark Truth, a taut and revealing environmental thriller starring

. After opening in a few theaters in January and languishing on VOD, it’s available for purchase beginning March 5.

In it, Garcia plays a former CIA operative turned political talk show host who is hired by a corporate whistle blower to expose her company’s cover-up of a massacre in a South American village. When he arrives, he is plunged into a violent and chaotic situation, with the military cracking down on a group of protesters led by Longoria and Whitaker.

Reviews of the film were not kind, but most viewers never got a chance to see it: it opened in a grand total of three theaters, and earned lunch money. This seems to be standard operating procedure for Magnolia, the distributor of A Dark Truth: they have been around for years and have released more than thirty films in 2012 and 2013 alone…but exactly one of them, Goon, was seen in more than a few theaters (literally: less than two digits). This includes fairly well-respected films like The Good Doctor, A Royal Affair, and John Dies at the End, all of which found themselves moved almost immediately into VOD, Netflix, and DVD.

There’s also one other way to judge for yourself: you can view it online for $3.99 on Amazon Instant Video, here.
