Padilha’s name is going to be new to everyone but the most diehard fan (Elite Squad? Anyone? Beuhler?), but his reboot of Robocop looks…well, awesome.
Born and bred in Rio de Janeiro, José Padilha demonstrated his love and mastery of the action picture with Brazilian hits like Elite Squad and its sequel and some hugely effective documentaries like Bus 174, about a tragic hostage-taking crisis that was broadcast live back in 2000.
Fluent in English and in the vocabulary of the thriller, Padilha talks not only about the rock ’em-sock ’em of Robocop, but about the dark social satire that informed Paul Verhoeven’s original film, and looks to be present in the remake as well. All the clips for Robocop that have appeared so far promise a great ride and some actual food for thought. And he’s got a hell of a cast to help him, including Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Aimee Garcia, Jackie Earle Haley, Miguel Ferrer and relative newcomer Joel Kinnaman as Murphy himself.
Here’s a cool little bit with Padhila himself and a new trailer…
