Adan Canto is in “X-Men: Days of Future Past”

Adan Canto

Latino superheroes in the X-Men franchise have been few and far between, but maybe Adan Canto, as “New Mutant” Sunspot, can change all that

XMEN Sunspot

If you look quickly at the very busy new trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past. You may recognize Canto from his civilian identity as a busy young actor in Latino Hollywood. He was a hapless cult member who came to a bad end in the first season of The Following on Fox last year (and he won’t be back for Season 2, what with being dead and all). But he is the center-of-the-action bartender in the new ABC series Mixology, scheduled for the mid-season at the moment.

Showing up in Days of Future Past is actually a pretty big deal. Sunspot is one of Marvel Comics’ few (and oldest) Latin characters, the son of a wealthy Afro-Brazilian businessman who’s been around since the debut of “The New Mutants” back in 1982. He has the power to gather up solar energy and project it as bolts of destructive force (pretty cool, actually). Not an American Latino, exactly, but one of the first recognizably brown faces with super-powers in the Marvel Universe, and certainly one of the most durable.

It’s hard to say how much in the foreground Sunspot (and therefore Adan) will be in Days; it’s clear from the trailer that this movie is crammed with superpowered people of all ages and shapes. But it’s nice to see at least one Latino in the mix…Check out the trailer below.
