Who’d have thought that handsome and dashing Antonio Banderas would have a career as a voice actor in animation–and now as a producer as well. He’s all that and more in Justin and the Knights of Valour, premiering January 21
Everyone remembers Banderas’ pretty delightful turn as Puss in Boots in the Shrek movies and his own starring vehicle Puss in Boots. What most didn’t know is that his interest in animation has been greater than just doing the occasional voice; he’s been involved with the Spanish animation studio Kandor Graphics for quite a while. Kandor has already been nominated for a Oscar for one of its short subjects; now it’s back with a full-length features–and the voice of Antonio Banderas, among many others–in a light-hearted medieval fantasy, complete with swords and dragons, called Justin and the Knights of Valour.
Produced entirely in Europe, and primarily with actors from the UK and the continent, the film actually premiered overseas last September, but it’s only making its way to the U.S. Now. You’ll hear some familiar voices, including Saoirse Ronan (the lead in The Host), Alfred Molina, and Freddy Sizemore (young Norman Bates from Bates Motel, complete with his actual British accent) as Justin himself.
The Youtube channel of Britian’s Premiere Scene did a terrific job covering the red carpet opening of the film last fall; here’s some extended coverage of the event, including interviews with Banderas and director Manuel Sicilia about the film itself, Banderas’ involvement, and the unique (and rewarding) challenges for producing high-quality features in Spain.
