Comedy Central Thinks Latinos Are Funny

Gabriel Iglesias gets a six-episode showcase for Latino comics, starting October 6

Gabriel Iglesias is a big, big guy who is big, big funny. With his funny voices, shotgun delivery and occasionally giddy on-stage personal, the “fluffy” comic in the Hawaiian shirt has been a popular addition to late-night stand-up TV for quite a while, from The Tonight Show to Conan to JKL. He’s also had two hour-long specials on Comedy Central already: I’m Not Fat, I’m Fluffy, and Hot and Fluffy (both available on DVD, by the way). According to ComCen, they’ve sold over a million copies combined–not bad at all.

Now Comedy Central, the Viacom home of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are taking the next step with the Latino comic as he hosts Gabriel Iglesias Presents Stand-Up Revolution, filming at Stand Up Live in Phoenix, Arizona and premiering October 6. The best thing about it–apart from new material by Gabriel himself–is the showcase it provides for a wide range of Latino stand-ups, and every-episode music from three-time Grammy winners Ozomatli. Iglesias has got his long-time friend Martin Moreno on board as his announcer and sidekick, and the list of guests is long and impressive, including Cristela Alonzo, Zhivago Blea, Tommy Chunn, Joey CoCo Diaz, Dillon Garcia, Dennis Gaxiola, Noe Gonzalez, Rick Gutierrez, Maz Jobrani, Shaun Latham, Rudy Moreno, Larry Omaha, Carlos Oscar, Alfred Robles, Cleto Rodriguez, Edwin San Juan, Paul Varghese and Thea Vidale.

Not enough? The first episode also include the debut of Iglesias’ music video–no, really–called “Hey, It’s Fluffy,” written and performed by Ozomatli and featuring cameos by many of the comics appearing on the series.

You can get more information here. …and give it a try starting Thursday, Oct. 6 at 8P on Comedy Central. (Or you could wait for the DVD. It’s scheduled for release on November 15, just days after the last episode airs. The DVD will actually be a two-disc set with 40 minutes of new material of Iglesias, extended episodes, outtakes, and the music video. Not bad!).
