Eva Mendes and “Girl in Progress:” more (and more like this) please

We’d been wondering where Eva Mendes had gotten off to. Not that she’s been invisible, what with fashion shoots and cameos, but that strong, smart, beautiful Latina persona deserves all the exposure it can get.

Our patience has been rewarded. Come May 11, Eva stars in Girl in Progress, and judging by the newly released trailer, this has been well worth the wait.

Get this: an intelligent, funny, gentle, and touching movie about a single mom and her daughter both coming of age…and the mom and the daughter are both recognizably, cheerfully Latino, interacting cheerfully and easily with other cultures and ethnicities. In short: a 21st century Latino movie for all of us.

So great, congrats to Eva, Eugenio Derbez (¡Rob!), Raini Rodriguez (Austin & Ally) and the increasingly amazing Cierra Ramirez.
