“Her” is Thought-Provoking and Funny, Too

Spike Jonze’s newest film, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, and the voice of Scarlett Johanssen is not a film for everyone, but the (mostly Latino audience I saw it with loved it), Latino and non-Latino alike. I really didn’t know what to expect from a sci-fi dramedy about a lonely man who falls in love with a bodiless artificial intelligence (kind of a super-Siri), but what I got was a very enjoyable film.

Joaquin Phoenix

It’s funny, sad and romantic at the same time. It has some good writing and some really good acting. Phoenix especially is so good in this role. Though I don’t think I’ve ever seen him give a bad performance, no matter what he’s been in.

The film had a limited release back in December and will be in wide release on Friday, January 10. Audiences are just beginning to discover it, as well they should. It has a few Latinos sprinkled here and there.

And one last point re: Latinos: even though Joaquín Rafael Bottom (Joaquin Phoenix) was born in Puerto Rico, he’s not Latino. His family traveled a lot, so he and his siblings were born in different places.
