Latino Stereotypes: the good, the bad, the ugly

Sara Inés Calderón gives us a thoughtful piece on dealing with the realities of the gangbanger, the gardener, and the lazy maid

TV shows like Rob! And the upcoming Devious Maids, along with a  constant barrage of jokes, stand-up routines and movie roles have given the issue of Latino stereotypes in the media a sad immediacy. Now Sara Inés Calderón, editor at the truly excellent News Taco (click here to enjoy it) has written a smart piece about exactly that for the equally excellent mamiverse.com. (Another site well worth visiting, even if you’re not a Latina mom).

Among many other wise things, Calderon says, “As a U.S. Latino, what’s the best way to handle Latino stereotyping? You can either grow jaded, get angry, seethe with outrage, or you can just laugh. The latter at least promises to bring everyone into the conversation.” Read the complete piece here and thanks, Ines!
