For the last few years, Julio Ricardo Varela and his “rebeldes” over at Latino Rebels have been doing some refreshing and often funny work about Latino politics, culture, and media. This week they had some very pointed and smart things to say about “La Llorona,” the Latino-themed episode of Grimm that premiered this week (and is still available for viewing at NBC.com and on Hulu.com.)
Last Friday night, we were intrigued by “The Legend of La Llorona” episode from NBC’s GRIMM. When we found out about it a few days before, we thought that it was a baby step in the right direction in the quest to bring more authentic Latino content into the mainstream. There were still questions: Would the content feel natural? Or would it feel foreign, glossy, and stale? And will there just be a lot of actors speaking in bad accents?

Our ideas for Latino Rebels came from watching way too many Daily Show episodes, being on social media way too long, listening to too much punk music and devouring the biographies of Zapata, Martí, Albizu, Menchú and so many other Latino Rebels from Latin American history.”
Well worth watching…as is this episode of Grimm.
