La Lupe truly was the Queen of Latin Soul, almost from the moment she set foot in the United States from Cuba. And actress/singer Lauren Vélez, probably best known for her portrayal of a flawed and powerful Latina police detective on HBO’s Dexter, seems to possess the uncanny ability to channel La Lupe and her unique performance style. She does this in a one-woman show that recently played in Los Angeles; she is working even now to bring La Lupe’s life to the screen in a full-length film (a project she’s been working on for years, what she calls “her passion”), and she did it in a remarkable short written and directed by Franc. Reyes
about three years ago. Take a look at Vélez’ amazing performance. It will absolutely leave you wishing for more.
