Lauren Vélez Tries to Kickstart “They Call Me La Lupe”

And the clock is ticking…

We’ve been a big fan of Lauren Vélez and her work on Dexter for a long time; we even wrote about her straight-from-the-heart project, a biography of La Lupe, the Queen of Latin Soul, as she continued to try and find the fund to get the film off the ground.

Now Vélez is in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign to raise $100,000 and get the movie made.

La Lupe truly was the Queen of Latin Soul, almost from the moment she set foot in the United States from Cuba. And Vélez seems to possess the uncanny ability to channel La Lupe and her unique performance style. She impressed all comers in a one-woman show that recently played in Los Angeles, and she’s been working to bring La Lupe’s life to the screen in a full-length film for even longer—a project she calls “her passion.” She even starred in a remarkable short where she played La Lupe, written and directed by Franc. Reyes. Take a look at Vélez’ amazing performance. It will absolutely leave you wishing for more.

You can see a video message from Vélez and friends about the Kickstarter campaign right here, on the Kickstarter site. The window on the $100,000 goal closes Friday, October 25 at 10:07A.
