Melissa de Sousa: An Afro Panamanian Actress with Energy to Burn

Melissa de Sousa

Latinas come in all shades and sizes, and Melissa de Sousa reminds us of that every time we see her–which isn’t nearly often enough

Most folks will probably remember Melissa de Sousa first from Miss Congeniality back in 2000, but she’s only gotten more beautiful since, and delivered some exciting and sometimes hilarious performances on film and on TV, from episodes of Castle and Shameless to regular roles on a couple of Wayans sitcoms to the Valley of the Dolls remake to, most recently, many episodes of Reed Between the Lines. She was at her best in the feature film The Best Man in 1999; now we get another chance to see her, this time in The Best Man Holiday, releasing on DVD this week.

It hasn’t been easy for her, and she’s more than willing to say so (check out this revealing interview with Melissa to get some insight), but she is the very definition of a working actress, landing jobs and honing her craft in everything from dramas to sitcoms to action pictures, every year for more than a decade. She even appeared as Lady Anne in An Evening of Shakespeare with Charles Dutton in a live performance in Los Angeles not long ago. And she can turn it on: last Christmas Eve, during the press tour for Best Man Holiday, she was even persuaded to rap Mob Deep’s “Only the Strong Survive.” Check it out:

Best Man Holiday is available on DVD Tuesday, February 11, and you can follow Melissa on Twitter at @1MelissadeSousa.
