Now in theaters: Animation, Adventure and Thrillers, all with Latinos in the mix

Chico and Rita, the Oscar-nominated feature-length animated film about Havana in 1948, gets a small opening (only in New York) after a lengthy film-festival tour that began last year in Toronto. In fact, here’s a nice little interview with the Producer and Director, Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal from the Toronto Film Festival, where Mariscal says, “The movie is like a song itself”…

Luis Guzmán costars in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, along with Dwayne “The Rock”Johnson, Michael Caine, Vanessa Hudgens, and Josh Hutcherson, soon to be internationally famous for Hunger Games. Vanessa calls it a fun, fantasy-filled adventure,” and it looks like that. Judge the production values for yourself in this featurette, available on imdb and elsewhere. You’ll see Luis there as the slightly goofy helicopter pilot (and Hudgens’ dad!). And if you can’t get enough Guzmán, you can catch him in the neoclassic, Boogie Nights, Saturday Feb. 11 at 7:20P.

And Ruben Blades, the musician/actor/political force of nature that we don’t see nearly often enough (hey, the man is busy!) has a supporting role in the ‘big’ movie of the week the Denzel Washington/Ryan Reynolds CIA thrillers Safe House, that does its level (or explosive) best to be this year’s answer to the adventure of Jason Bourne (and good luck to them: Jeremy Renner has just been announced as the new Bourne).
