Sofía Vergara is the only other Latina mentioned by name this year, though a few TV shows with Latinos in them get a nod. Basically: same ol’ same ol’ this season
Oscar Isaac’s wonderful and subtle performance as a mythical Sixties folk singer in New York received some serious recognition in this year’s Golden Globe nominations, but U.S. Latinos in general were (once again) pretty much ignored or in the background…which is, sadly, typical of the Globes.
On the motion picture front, Alfonso Cuaron’s amazing space-thriller Gravity was nominated for Best Motion Picture–Drama. American Hustle, which features Louis C.K., Michael Peña and Adrian Martinez in its voluminous ensemble, was nominated for Best Motion Picture–Comedy or Drama, alongside Oscar Isaac in The Coen Bros’ Inside Llewyn Davis. Oscar himself was nominated for Best Actor, Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. He’s also part of the trio nominated for Best Original Song, with Justin Timberlake and Adam Driver.
As for television, three of the five Best Comedy Series have Latinos in the cast: Brooklyn Nine Nine, Modern Family, and Parks and Recreation. Unfortunately, Aubrey Plaza, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Biatriz, and Rico Rodriguez don’t rate individual nominations in the Best Actor/Actress categories. Only Sofía Vergara was nominated, yet again, for the fading Modern Family.
The 71st annual Golden Globe Awards will be held on Jan. 12, 2014. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will host, just as they did in 2013.
