I laughed ALL the way through the movie. It had just enough crazy for me and I found it to be a great follow-up to the Vacation franchise. I love the new Griswolds!

Rusty Gristwold is all grown up now, with a family of his own. He’s played by Ed Helms; Christina Applegate his wife Debbie; and his sons are played by two wonderful young actors, Skyler Gisondo and Steeler Stebbins. The rest of the cast is filled out by Chris Hemsworth, Leslie Mann, Chevy Chase, and Beverly D’Angelo. It was written and directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein.

We caught up with producer/director Mark Neveldine (Crank, Crank: Crank: High Voltage, Gamer) and got to talk to him about his new horror thriller, The Vatican Tapes. That follows the ultimate battle between good and evil-God versus Satan through the life of an ordinary 27-year-old woman named Angela Holmes.

Mark Neveldine

Mark Neveldine

We know Neveldine from his work with Brian Taylor on the Crank pictures and his wife, actress Alison Lohman (Drag Me to Hell, Big Fish, Gamer). He talks about finishing the Crank trilogy, what he would like to do if they get to do a sequel of Vatican Tapes and set advice from his wife.

PixelsPixels

I found Pixels nostalgic for the music and the old pinball machines. There are a few good laughs but I found the film a bit long…

Directed by Chris Columbus and starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad, Michelle Monaghan and Peter Dinklage.

Coming on Blu-ray/DVD Soon

home-blu-ray-dvd-HOME-3D_rgbTwo films that are part of my favorite list for the year, I think you’ll enjoy them.

A La Mala

A family film, Home will be available on Blu-ray/DVD on July 28. The Home party edition is packed with over an hour of hit music and fun dancing content. Great for the whole family to do their Boov Thing! Check out our previous post here.

The other film is a romantic comedy, A La Mala, will be available on DVD on August 4. We wrote about it here.

Laughter, Heartache and LOVESTRUCK

LovestruckWe rarely do pieces on live theater here at Se Fija!, and when we do, it’s because there was something special about the play. (And I admit it, I really enjoy live theater. A lot.)

I recently checked out Lovestruck, a comedy with a little drama and–most of all–a big heart, and it has that “something special.”

Lola Anthony

Lola Anthony

It stars two very talented actresses, Lola Anthony (Laura) and Ivet Corvea (Rachel), who are dealing with the ups and downs of being in a committed relationship. And if you are in one, or have been in one, you’ll find yourself laughing out loud at some of the topics that are touched on in the play.

Ivet Corvea

Ivet Corvea

Credit definitely goes to the two actresses for making you feel that you are right there, experiencing it with them.

The play was directed and produced by playwright Odalys Nanin, founder of Macha Theatre who cowrote the play with Marie Barientos. If you are in the Los Angeles/West Hollywood area, there are Only TWO performances left, July 31 and August 1 at 8P, at Macha Theatre.

For me, it was a nice way to spend a Friday evening. Lovestruck really is “a sexy romantic comedy, Cuban style.” I bet you’ll love it! —A.O.

By Brad Munson

We were all so afraid that the Disney/Marvel creators had finally stepped in it. But you can relax: even the most stalwart fan of the many lives of Hank Pym and Scott Lang will like Ant-Man.

Even in the crazed, inconsistent world of contemporary superhero comics, Ant-Man has had a rough go of it. He was a scientist/engineer turned hero, like Tony Stark and Reed Richards and Ray Palmer over in the DCU. Then he was a mad scientist who created Ultron, the greatest threat to the world (don’t worry, that was retconned out of existence long ago). Then he was a Giant-Man, then he was Yellowjacket (a sad case of comic-book split personalities), then a drunken washout, then a wife-beater over in the Ultimate Universe. Then Scott Lang came along and tried, over and over, to reboot the franchise with little success, and he fell into the slightly jokey and pathetic place that Hawkeye has known far too well.

Audio-Button-200

Ant-Man PosterClearly the folks behind Ant-Man know this all too well…and they don’t care. They’ve crafted an all-new, slightly different Ant-Man & Company that exhibits great affection for his many (often awful) incarnations; a film that, yes, is a little more humorous, a little more goofy than the other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies like Avengers, Captain America and the rest (and in themselves separate from the upcoming trainwreck of the X-Men/Fantastic Four fiascoes [fiasci]?), but fun and smart and legitimately action-packed. It fits surprisingly well into the MCU and makes even the most jaded fan look forward to the (equally risky) Captain America: Civil War.

So relax, fanpeople! Have fun!

A Day at the Circus in Pictures

Circus 1A few days ago I got a chance to spend some time at the circus with a group of other journalists. We talked about our fun memories of going to the circus as kids and a few of us realize as adults we have mix feelings about the circus now. And that is why I’ve chosen to do this piece mostly in pictures.

The Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey merged together in 1919 after being two separate circuses’ for more than 100 years ago.

They’ll be at the STAPLES Center in downtown Los Angeles with their Circus Xtreme from July 9 – 14. And it will be in the southland until August 2. Check their site here for locations.

Now checkout the photos: me in front of the famous logo, the first images are of Bengal Tiger presenter and trainer, Chilean Taba Maluenda.

Circus 2In the second set of photos: our friend at Cinemovietv interviewing Taba about his work with the tigers, some of the circus costumes we got to tryout and fun toys the kids can choose from to take home. — A.O.
