They Don’t need to Remake Global Frequency, they need to Revive It

comic Issue-1From our friends at Amityville Now

Michelle Forbes, Aimee Garcia, and Josh Hopkins are not only still with us, they all look virtually the same as they did in 2005—or even better. So go find the lost pilot, re-release it, sign ’em up and let’s get this show on the road, Fox.

L-r: Josh Hopkins (Sean), Jenni Baird (Dr. Finch), Aimee Garcia (Aleph) and Michelle Forbes (Miranda Zero)

So here’s the good news: Warren Ellis’ major mind-melt of a comic, Global Frequency, has been optioned by Fox. Apparently emboldened by the ‘success’ of Gotham and the buzz around comics properties on virtually every other network, they’re forgetting the painful death of Human Target and trying again, with a half-espionage, half-X-Files adventure starring a—get this, it’s pretty original—team of eccentric super-techs led by the most cynical heroine in modern funnybooks, Miranda Zero.

It’s a great idea. It’s just not necessary.

Warren Ellis

Warren Ellis

Global Frequency (the comic series) is very good. In fact, along with Planetary, it may be the best stuff Warren Ellis ever wrote in comics, even a decade and a half later (and yes, even better than The Authority and Transmetropolitan, as good as those were). And one of the great missed opportunities for the last decade is the TV version of Global Frequency that was completed, never shown, and never optioned. Read the rest of this entry »

Next Spring’s Disaster Movie San Andreas Looks Scary-Cool

SanAndreasIt’s been a while since there’s been a really good disaster movie—in fact, we can’t remember one in recent memory. But next spring’s San Andreas, starring Dwayne “The Rock”Johnson and Carla Gugino, may just break the mold. Almost literally. Here’s the pretty damn cool trailer:

This reminds us: time to do a Disaster Movie Collection and a Carla Gugino Collection (Spy Kids, Electra Luxx, Karen Sisco, Sucker Punch, Watchmen, the Girl Walks Into a Bar trilogy, and SO much more. Damn!).

A Thriller, a Comedy and a Drama in Theaters Friday

The CaptiveTop FiveInherent_Vice_1We say this all the time, another weekend of new releases and it’s hard to choose the best, but we thought these were interesting to check out.

We are huge fans of Rosario Dawson and were happy to see she’s in two films releasing Friday—one is the thriller The Captive and the other is the comedy Top Five with Chris Rock. Then there’s the drama Inherent Vice. This is one of those films you’ll have to watch a few more times, because there’s so much to take in, maybe because it’s an adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel. And we want to give a shout-out to our friend, Yvette Yates (Luz) whose part of it. Read the rest of this entry »

Patricia Krebs and Her Spanish Voice Overs

Patricia KrebsFor the past few years artist/singer/filmmaker Patricia Krebs has been doing some great music voice-overs for films dubbed in Spanish. Here’s a short list of films she has worked on; Happy Feet, Corpse Bride, Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire and Beowulf.

We’ve written about this wonderful talented woman before and you can read it here. And you can check out more of Patricia’s videos on her YouTube Channel.

And here’s a special treat—a sample from Patricia’s upcoming album, Amuzikanto: a whim of the child I still am (un capricho de la niña que aun soy).

James S.A. Corey’s The Expanse is Coming to SyFy. Hard SF Fans Rejoice

1-calibans-war-by-james-sa-coreyReposted from our friends over on Amityville Now

Some of the best hard science fiction of the last decade is destined for TV, and hopes are high.

Most everybody here at AmityvilleNow.com International HQ, Inc. LLC GlobalCo stopped reading hard science fiction quite a few years ago. Yeah, yeah, the occasional Ben Bova or Stephen Baxter or Greg Bear might lure us back temporarily, but let’s face it, most of modern-day hard sf is pretty second-rate: militarist claptrap or technobabble (and we’re not even including franchise spins like Star Trek and Star Wars).

But just in the last few years, Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck combined under the pseudonym of James S.A. Corey have returned some real energy to hard SF with the “Expanse” series. And now it’s going to be on the televisor viewing box in 2015…

Leviathan’s Wake, Caliban’s War, Abaddon’s Gate and most recently Cibola Burn, as well as a handful of on-line-only novellas explore a very real interplanetary society that inhabits the near planets and the asteroids about two hundred years from now. Political unrest and tension between the inner and out planets is already high, and a sudden assault by the first interstellar threat ever encountered only makes it worse, threatening everyone from Earth to Ganymede. Every book of The Expanse is filled with believable tech, smart plotting and best of all, real and fascinating characters that you actually want to get to know. No, really.

And now the SyFy Network had decided to go straight to series with a ten-part hour-long series based on The Expanse, with both halves of S.A.Corey serving as executive producers. Read the rest of this entry »

Michael DeLorenzo, Mauricio Mendoza Talk “It Can Only Be Used Once”

Michael DeLorenzo

Michael DeLorenzo

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of sitting down with actor/now director Michael DeLorenzo and producer Mauricio Mendoza. We talked about their short, It Can Only Be Used Once.

Mauricio Mendoza

Mauricio Mendoza

The Bronx-born DeLorenzo was part of the television series Fame, and Head of the Class, though he is probably best known for his portrayal of NYPD Detective Eddie Torres on New York Undercover. All of them showcased his amazing range as a dancer, singer, comedian and dramatic actor; with It Can Only Be Used Once, we’re now getting to see more of his vision as a writer and director. Meanwhile, Mauricio Mendoza has been a hard-working Latino character actor for decades; one of those talented types whose face looks familiar the minute you see him. Now he, too, is showing off his other talent: producer.

In our conversation, we talked about their new project, as well as their long friendship and even their first meeting in the ground-breaking Showtime series Resurrection Blvd.

Terminator Genisys Trailer is Here!

TG Poster150The long awaited trailer to Terminator Genisys is finally here. And I have to say, it looks good.

Directed by Alan Taylor and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, Jason Clarke, Matt Smith, Byung-Hun Lee, and JK Simmons.

Arrow! Flash! Flash! Arrow! But Most Important: Captain Boomerang!

arrow-flash400We caught a hint of it last week, when “Digger Harkness” showed up at the end of Arrow and boomerang’d some dude right in the back, man. The geekmasters here at AmityvilleNow and SeFija! knew that name immediately: that’s the DC Universe’s most beloved rogue supervillain, Captain Boomerang! And he seems to be at the center of at least part of this midseason finale crossover between the vastly improved Arrow and the great-out-of-the-gate Flash.
