Panic 5 Bravo is a tough, tight little film–a thriller about a team of American paramedics that receive an emergency call over their ambulance radio–5 Bravo, Mexico’s distress code for a shooting incident. The team decides to break the rules and cross the Mexican border, and that’s when the mission turns into a nightmare.

Panic 5 Bravo is the vision of writer/director/actor Kuno Becker, who conceived of the project when he was making a documentary on ambulance teams–a documentary he’s still working on. With some backing from Cinemedia, he managed to shoot the film in less than three weeks, on a budget of no more than half a million dollars. Read the rest of this entry »

Actor, Choreographer, Activist Rosie Perez on NBC’s Cafecito

Rosie Perez

Rosie Perez

The more I hear Rosie Perez talk, I think of her more as an activist first and everything else follows. She’s the first full time Latina co-host on The View and she has her own point of view(s). Here she joins host Feliciano Garcia to talk about the challenges she faced through her youth and why she fights to keep the arts in underserved schools.

NBC’s Cafecito is one of those online shows with some interesting guests with some good talk.

Penguins of Madagascar Visit Para Los Niños

Para Los Ninos400The Penguins of Madagascar visit the children of Para Los Niños to kick off the holidays with a special program and a special clip from their upcoming film being released November 26.

I caught up with Milena Acosta, the outreach supervisor for The Aquarium of the Pacific who shared the incredible story of the Magellanic penguins with the children and with me. It is a great story, the penguins hatched this summer after their Mama Penguin who hails from the coasts of Chile and Argentina was rescued off the shores of Brasil. The brave Latina penguin was brought to the aquarium to be rehabilitated and can be seen at June Keyes Penguin Habitat at The Aquarium of The Pacific.

Para Los Niños is a nonprofit organization that has worked for more than thirty years to create academic success and social well-being for children. You can find out more about this organization here.

I want to thank Ivette Rodriguez of AEM, a longtime supporter of Para Los Niños for the invitation.

Constantine Still Isn’t Hitting on All Cylinders, BUT…

constantine670Reposted from our friends over on Amityville Now

…it’s nice to see actual comics people and good ol’ sf-film professionals all over this thing: Mark Verheiden, David S. Goyer, Rockne S. O’Bannon, and John “Saturday Night Fever/Blue Thunder” Badham. And hey, look: Papa Midnite! And The Spectre!

It may not have the street cred of Arrow or Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but you have to give Constantine credit for hanging in there. After a false start and a couple of weak episodes, writing-wise, the newest episode, “Danse Vandue,” was pretty nice. (We blame it on the setting. N’Orleans is the most haunted city in America, innit?). Read the rest of this entry »

Introducing Los Hermanos Ospina en Español, kinda?

Inténtalo Carito

Inténtalo Carito

My brother sent me a video about Spanish being difficult to speak and it turned out to be very funny. Below is a little about the musicians and their video.

“This is an attempt to translate our song ‘Qué difícil es hablar el español,’ for any non-Spanish speakers who might want to know what are we talking about.”

Juan Andrés and Nicolás Ospina are two Colombian brothers who are musicians by profession. Pianists, producers, composers and arrangers who have spent years living between New York, Barcelona, Bogota and Buenos Aires, and collaborating with different artists of international renown.

In 2012 they form the duo Try Carito and composed the song “How hard it is to speak Spanish,” which became a phenomenon in social networks that until now has over six million hits on youtube. Their show combines a display of instrumental and vocal skills loaded with clever lyrics of a refined sense of humor. Which reminds me a lot of musician Dave Frishberg lyrical humor and the zaniness of “Spike” Jones.
