We won’t see the strong, smart, warm, wry presence of Elizabeth Peña again. From La Bamba to Down and Out in Beverly Hills to more TV than we can remember, in comedy or drama, she was always worth watching. We will miss her deeply.

The news hit all the trades this morning: Elizabeth Peña passed away in Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles at the age of 55. You can read the details and a moving personal tribute to her from Mario-Francisco Robles in Latino Review, right here. No cause of death has been reported quite yet.

Addiction, A Very Bad Day, A Judge, A Blood Sucker, and a Saint

Addicted200Addicted
This film will leave you hot and bothered! It’s been a long time since I’ve watched a film with so many beautiful, sexy people. Don’t get me wrong, the film deals with a very serious problem-addiction-and it’s not perfect. But it keeps you watching, and it’s based on the best-selling novel by Zane. It stars Sharon Leal in the lead female role, William Levy, Boris Kodjoe, Tyson Beckford, Tasha Smith, Emayatzy E. Corinealdi, Maria Howell, and Kat Graham join her.

Alexander300Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
I thought this film was going to be crazy and chaotic, like so many of these types of films are…but it wasn’t. 11-year-old Alexander has a really, really bad day, one calamity after another, but when he shares his day of misadventures with his family he finds little sympathy. Then he wonders if only bad things happens to him.

It is a fun family movie directed by Miguel Arteta (Nurse Jackie, Cedar Rapids, The Good Girl) and starring Steve Carell, Jennifer Garner, Bella Thorne, Dylan Minnette and Ed Oxenbould as Alexander.

The Judge200The Judge
This drama deals with family conflicts, and small town vs. big city ethics, in the law and in lifestyle. Robert Downey Jr.’s character Henry “Hank” Palmer is a successful lawyer who returns to his hometown for his mother’s funeral, and must confront his estranged father, Henry. That’s when all the drama begins.

The Judge is a well-acted and star-studded film. Along with Downey Jr. you have Robert Duvall, Vincent D’Onofrio, Vera Farmiga, Jeremy Strong, Billy Bob Thornton and many more.

Dracula_Untold_200Dracula Untold
I love Dracula movies, good ones and even some bad ones. And when I found out a new Dracula movie was coming out, I got very excited. The description below says it all; let’s see how it does in the theaters. Starring Luke Evans, Dominic Cooper, and Sarah Gadon.

Dracula Untold explores the origin of Dracula, weaving vampire mythology with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler, depicting Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war.”

St Vinsent200St. Vincent (Limited release)
I really enjoyed this film. I found Bill Murray’s performance superb. He plays a retired curmudgeon that enjoys alcohol and gambling. Then he gets a new neighbor with a twelve year-old son that he ends up babysitting. A special relationship blossoms between the two.

Melissa McCarthy, Chris O’Dowd, Naomi Watts, Jaeden Lieberher round out the rest of the cast.

Fifty Years of Fania Records Stars and Music!

50th-Album250“Fifty years ago, New York City musician Johnny Pacheco and his lawyer friend Jerry Masucci started a small Latin music record label and delivered their first albums to record stores across the city—from the trunk of the musician’s car.” NPR

We usually don’t write about music, but if you grew-up like me listening to Celia Cruz, Cheo Feliciano, Ruben Blades and so many more you’ll like this conversation with NPR’s Rachel Martin and Felix Contreras, co-host of NPR Music’s Alt.Latino podcast about the importance of Fania Records.
