“The Equalizer” Holds Up Just Fine

The Equalizer200By Angela Ortíz

Denzel Washington kicks ass and is a master of coolness as The Equalizer. You think I liked the Film? I didn’t even think of the 1980s show with the late English actor Edward Woodward.

I liked his scenes with Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick Ass, Carrie) who I think is one of Hollywood’s very talented young actresses. And this is Washington’s second film with Training Day director Antoine Fuqua.

The Boxtrolls200By Angela Ortíz

Once in a while you come across a film you just really like, and for me, it’s Focus Features The Boxtrolls and is an adaptation of the book “Here Be Monsters!” by Alan Snow. The stop-motion animation studio Laika, the company that gave us Coraline and ParaNorman that were fun films made this one also.

The talent behind some of the voices are; Sir Ben Kingsley (Archibald Snatcher), Elle Fanning (Winnie) and like her sister Dakota (the voice of Coraline) is now part of the Laika family. And Isaac Hempstead Wright (Game of Thrones) is the voice of Eggs.

It’s a film for the whole family; even some very young ones (two-years-old) were able to sit through it.

Below is a video interview with one of the directors, Anthony Stacchi.

The Boxtrolls in theaters September 26.

“Más negro que la noche” (“Darker Than Night”) Opens on Friday

Mas Negra Que La Noche250A young film student and Se Fija! publisher Angela Ortíz offer two perspectives (and an interview with a star) about the first horror film from Mexico presented in 3-D

By Patricia Gonzalez

I had pretty good expectations for this film after watching the trailers, but I was a little disappointed when I finally saw the film. The story had great potential, but the final version just didn’t measure up.

Some of it works very well. The film has a lot of flashbacks that line up with the present-day story, and they add a lot to the film. The cinematography was done very well, too; there were many long shots that really gave you the feeling of this massive house. On the other hand, the 3D didn’t do much; I think it just made the image a bit clearer. It looked very similar to the graphics that you see in a new xbox or ps4 video game. It didn’t really include anything that popped out at you.

The film did include subtitles that translated fairly accurately. As far as characters go, the four main girls (Greta, Pilar, Maria and Vicky) were very believable; you could build relationships with them and understand them. Evangelina was the only character that I had issues with; her acting was too serious and simply not believable in some scenes.

I hope this film is successful, but I don’t think it’s like any typical horror movie we see today, primarily because it becomes more of a story then a “Hollywood” horror gory movie.

Zuria Vega, one of the stars of Más negro que la noche, spoke with Se Fija! publisher Angela Ortíz. Here’s what Angela had to say about their conversation:

It’s always interesting to hear what the actors say about the films they make, and Zuria was no exception. A well-known Mexican soap opera actress, Zuria is also the daughter of Gonzalo Vega, Mexico’s beloved actor who’s been dealing with some health issues—but doing well.

Zuria doesn’t speak a lot of English but she does get by just fine. This is her third feature film and she would like to make more films in different parts of the world (U.S., Spain, etc.). She knows they will be critics who don’t like the film, but that’s fine with her. I can see she’s young, ambitious and about to get married.

Zuria said she tried to make the best film possible in this genre and hopes that this will bring Mexico back in the forth front of filmmaking and that they need to see that you have to open films in more than 200 theaters where others are opening in thousands.

Más negro que la noche open nationwide on Friday, September 26. Enjoy the trailer here:

Se Fija! publisher Angela Ortíz had a great opportunity to curate a photography show about “Latinos in Hollywood” in celebration of Latino Heritage month.

Angela said, “The exhibit is a sample of Latinos in Hollywood in front and behind the camera. It would take many more walls to do a comprehensive exhibit of this magnitude.” …“It is the first exhibit of this type in one of the world busiest airport—and we get to celebrate some of the contributions of Latinos in the entertainment industry through these images.”

The exhibit is at American Airlines Terminal 4 at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The exhibit consists of 37 photographs of some of Hollywood’s brightest Latino stars, both past and present. Out of the 37 photographs, 26 are Angela’s and one is by her son Gabriel P. Rodriguez. She’s very proud and happy to share these images with such a large traveling audience—and she hopes people will follow-up by educating themselves on the history of Latinos in Hollywood.

Angela thanks Nilza Serrano, LACERS Commissioner and LatinoHeritageLA for the opportunity to work on this project.

Here’s a glimpse of the show in the video below:

Laz Alonso Talks about his Past, Present and Future Works

Laz Alonso and Debra Messing The Mysteries of Laura

The Mysteries of Laura

Laz Alonso has been impressing us with honest and often raw performances of real men–cops, gangsters, soldiers, and the like. Now he’s bringing a new character to life–another cop!–on the new NBC crime dramady The Mysteries of Laura, officially premiering Wednesday, September 24. (The pilot’s been available on line for a few weeks now, and the reactions to Debra Messing’s work with Alonso have been pretty good).

Angela Ortíz had the pleasure of talking with Laz on the phone just recently, for an in-depth conversation about his past, present and future work as an actor…and something more. Audio and trailer below:

Dysfunction and a Horror Comedy in Theaters Now

This is Where I Leave You200This is Where I Leave You
I didn’t expect much from this film but I have to admit, I enjoyed watching this dysfunctional family—from the matriarch, played by Jane Fonda and all her offspring’s played by Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Adam Driver, and Corey Stoll. There’s chaos, humor, heartache and redemption that only families can provide. Also adding some good performances are; Kathryn Hahn, Rose Byrne, Connie Britton, Abigail Spencer, and Dax Shepard.

It’s hard to truly describe this film except that it’s a mixture of horror, comedy, drama, walruses and your imagination. The film is based on an idea writer/director Kevin Smith talked about on his podcast for sometime—He talks about the making of the film in the video below with our friend Teresa Garza of ChecaLaMovie. It stars Justin Long, Michael Parks, Génesis Rodríguez, and Haley Joel Osment.
