A Western Story with Some Complex Hearts

We liked this western. The story and the complexity of the main characters kept you captivated.

The Dead Don’t Hurt is a powerful and profoundly personal cinematic western written and directed by Viggo Mortensen. In theaters nationwide May 31.

Synopsis: The Dead Don’t Hurt is a story of star-crossed lovers on the western U.S. frontier in the 1860s. Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps) is a fiercely independent woman who embarks on a relationship with Danish immigrant Holger Olsen (Mortensen). After meeting Olsen in San Francisco, she agrees to travel with him to his home near the quiet town of Elk Flats, Nevada, where they start a life together. The outbreak of the civil war separates them when Olsen makes a fateful decision to fight for the Union. This leaves Vivienne to fend for herself in a place controlled by corrupt Mayor Rudolph Schiller (Danny Huston) and his unscrupulous business partner, powerful rancher Alfred Jeffries (Garret Dillahunt). Alfred’s violent, wayward son Weston (Solly McLeod) aggressively pursues Vivienne, who is determined to resist his unwanted advances. When Olsen returns from the war, he and Vivienne must confront and make peace with the person each has become. Both a tragic love story and a nuanced depiction of the conflict between revenge and forgiveness, The Dead Don’t Hurt is a portrait of a passionate woman determined to stand up for herself in an unforgiving world dominated by ruthless men.

Also starring Colin Morgan, Ray McKinnon, W. Earl Brown, and newcomer Atlas Green.

Upcoming Documentaries Worth Watching

A Thousand Pines, the documentary is directed and produced by Sebastián Díaz and Noam Osband, follows a season of Oaxacan tree planters traveling the United States and explores the hidden world of guest workers regrowing America’s forests and the challenges the workers and their families face.

A solid documentary. And so bittersweet for these workers and families. Yet we have some people who just don’t get how important they are to us, especially our economy.

The award-winning documentary film debuts on PBS’s INDEPENDENT LENS on April 1, at 10p. ET (check local listings). The film will also be available to stream on the PBS App.

Lost Angel: The Genius oF Judee Sill, a very interesting documentary, directed by Andy Brown and Brian Lindstrom.

Synopsis: The never-before-told story of folk-rock icon Judee Sill, who in just two years went from living in a car to appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone. The documentary charts her troubled adolescence through her meteoric rise in the music world and early tragic death.

In many ways, she was ahead of her time. In theaters and on Amazon and Apple TV on April 12.

Bob Marley: One Love

Getting lost in Bob Marley’s music after not listening to it on a regular basis for some time, was fantastic! The way reggae music moves you, there’s no words to really describe it.

This film is a great way to introduce Marley to a new audience who is willing to learn and listen to his story. I enjoyed the authenticity of the Jamaican and Caribbean sounds. Something dear to my heart, being Panamanian.

This is a great film, it is not perfect, because no bio pic is. With that said, I thought, the acting was superb. I found Kingsley Ben-Adir and Lashana Lynch believable as Bob and Rita Marley.

Also starring James Norton, Tosin Cole, Umi Myers, Anthony Welsh, Nia Ashi, Aston Barrett Jr., Anna-Sharé Blake, Gawaine “J-Summa” Campbell, Naomi Cowan, Alexx A-Game, Michael Gandolfini, Quan-Dajai Henriques, David Kerr, Hector Roots LewisAbijah “Naki Wailer” Livingston, Nadine Marshall, Sheldon Shepherd, Andrae Simpson, and Stefan A.D Wade.

Screenplay by Terence Winter, Frank E. Flowers, Zach Baylin, and Reinaldo Marcus Green. The film is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green. And produced in partnership with the Marley family.

Synopsis: Bob Marley: One Love celebrates the life and music of an icon who inspired generations through his message of love and unity. On the big screen for the first time, discover Bob’s powerful story of overcoming adversity and the journey behind his revolutionary music.

I really hope this film will help bring back the “One Love” concept. In theaters now.

The Greater the Spy, the Bigger the Lie

Argylle is very entertaining. It’s over the top, funny, and if you over look a few little inconsistencies, it’s thrilling. And it has a great soundtrack. You have to watch or you could miss a tiny detail. With that said, we give it, 👍🏼👍🏼

Bryce Dallas Howard as Elly Conway

From the twisted mind of Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman franchise, Kick-Ass) comes Argylle, a razor-witted, reality-bending, globe-encircling spy thriller.

Synopsis: Bryce Dallas Howard is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past.

Accompanied by Aiden (Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.

Cast includes Henry Cavill, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston, Sofia Boutella, Ariana DeBose, Catherine O’Hara, and Samuel L. Jackson. In theaters February 2, 2024.

Check out the official music video for Electric Energy performed by Ariana DeBose, Boy George, and Nile Rodgers.

National Geographic’s GENIUS: MLK/X

We watched the eight episodes of the new segment of National Geographic’s GENIUS series. And we thought they did a great job showcasing these two civil rights icons. It’s a must watch.

Two episodes will premiere weekly beginning February 1 on National Geographic at 9/8c and will stream the next day on both Disney+ and Hulu. The first episode of the new season, “Graduation,” will simulcast on ABC February 1 at 9/8c.

GENIUS: MLK/X explores simultaneously the formative years, pioneering accomplishments, dueling philosophies and key personal relationships of both Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and Malcolm X (Aaron Pierre). While King advanced racial equality through nonviolent activism, X advocated for Black empowerment, identity and self-determination. The eight-part series also brings their wives, Coretta Scott King (Weruche Opia) and Betty Shabazz (Jayme Lawson), to the forefront and shows them as formidable equals of the Movement. While King and X met only once and often challenged each other’s views, the two visionaries, with their wives leading by their sides, ultimately rose to pioneer a movement that lives on today.

Channing Godfrey Peoples (Miss Juneteenth) directed the pilot episode and also served as co-executive producer.

The Beekeeper is Action! Action! Action!

If you are looking for action, The Beekeeper does not disappoint. This action thriller with a bit of slasher thrown in is quite entertaining. Read what Lina Fubar has to say about it below.

I loved The Beekeeper when I thought it’ll just be another OK action movie. The tug of war of generations kept me interested in the story while the nostalgic action movie directing really made me reminisce being forced to watch Steven Seagal movies as a kid. The Beekeeper was shot with a lot of SHOCK factors and fun fighting scenes that kept me invested. I definitely recommend watching this movie with a dad with a watch history of The Expendables and Tropic Thunder.

Synopsis: In The Beekeeper, one man’s brutal campaign for vengeance takes on national stakes after he is revealed to be a former operative of a powerful and clandestine organization known as “Beekeepers.”

Starring Jason Statham, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, with Phylicia Rashad and Jeremy Irons. And directed by David Ayer.

In theaters now. ** NOT FOR CHILDREN **
