Mayes C. Rubeo is known for her work on Warcraft (2015), World War Z (2013), Avatar (2009), and Apocalypto (2006).
Rubeo, born in Mexico City, Mexico; moved to Los Angeles, attended a technical school; later on she took a few classes at UCLA Extension and some courses in Italy. Following her studies, she managed to get a job as designer Enrico Sabbatini’s personal assistant, a highly important figure in Italy’s movie industry. It was he who trained her, and put her on the right path to personal and professional growth. She started working on independent films, where she learned to create great things with very few resources, she worked as a costume assistant on films like Total Recall and Born on the Fourth of July; then the director John Sayles asked her to do the design of the costumes for a film called Men with Guns. Right after that, other directors started seeking her out, since they’d already seen her work.
For her, “costumes are a distinctive and highly important element of a film.”
Next on her plate is, Thor: Ragnarok, which will be the third film in the saga, starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Cate Blanchett, to be released in November 2017.
In the video below, we talked about her resent work on The Great Wall, which opens on February 17.
