Jonás Cuarón and Angela Ortíz

A few months ago I caught up with screenwriter, director, producer, Jonás Cuarón (Gravity, Aningaaq, Year of the Nail) who told us how he came up with his film story. He said about eight years ago while traveling through Arizona with his brother they stopped in Tucson and were invited by the consulate to tour their installations; during the tour they were told many border crossing stories, and about that time the anti-immigrant rhetoric was starting to creep up in the country. This made Cuarón start to think about how he could tell the stories that ended up being Desierto, a minimalist horror film with a conscious.

We had a chance to talk with him again more recently, but this time with his two lead actors, Gael Garcia Bernal and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. They told us all about their experiences and why they wanted to do the film.

Gael told us how the Cuarón family brought him into the film industry, and Jeffrey loved working with the dogs (he’s a huge animal lover).

Every viewer will interpret this film differently, depending on his or her experiences and opinions about the immigration issue.

Bernal, Cuarón & Morgan

I saw a comment that said Jeffrey Dean Morgan looked too handsome and fashionable to play such a vicious person. To me that is what worked: villains don’t always look the way you think.

Now sit back and listen in on the conversation. Desierto is in theaters now.— A.O.

I liked the film for what it tried to do, by showing a high functioning and brilliant person with one of the spectrums of Autism. With that said, the film feels unfinished to me but still entertaining. Ben Affleck does a really good job portraying the character of Christian Wolff and J.K. Simmons is just always good in everything.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story New Trailer

Out December 16

Sonia Braga Stars in Aquarius

Sonia Braga, Aquarius, Kleber Mendonça Filho From the first time I saw Sonia Braga, in Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, I’ve been a fan of her work. Now I get to add her new film, Aquarius to my list of favorites. There are some wonderful scenes in this film, even with the dark undertones in it.

Below is a wrap video interview with Braga and director Kleber Mendonça Filho talking about the making and rating of this film in Brazil.

Synopsis: Aquarius, is about an aging woman who refuses to succumb to a formidable group of developers trying to force her out of her apartment. But, looking deeper, it’s the story of a woman who has remained powerful—and sexual—well into her later years.

“Women of any age don’t lose their sexuality” — Sonia Braga

Aquarius is in theaters October 14.

The story: A visually spectacular and unabashedly emotional drama from director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Impossible, The Orphanage). 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall) is dealing with far more than other boys his age. His beloved and devoted mother (Felicity Jones) is ill. He has little in common with his imperious grandmother (Sigourney Weaver). His father (Toby Kebbell) has resettled thousands of miles away. But Conor finds a most unlikely ally when the Monster (Liam Neeson) appears at his bedroom window one night.

Producer Kevin Feige and director Scott Derrickson were in attendance to introduce the footage to the diehard fanboys in attendance, eager for the next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And one other cool thing: Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) appeared in a pre-recorded clip, and said at the start of the preview that there’s more than an hour’s worth of footage that was made specifically for IMAX presentations.

Doctor Strange vol 4

Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange (Doctor Strange) is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by artist and character conceptualist Steve Ditko, the character first appeared in Strange Tales. A former neurosurgeon, Strange serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.

This is a film that you have to watch on an IMAX 3D screen. It is quite a spellbinding experience. The look was described perfectly by director Scott Derrickson as “psychedelic trippy visuals” from the Marvel comics. And without spoiling it, there is also a very funny Stan Lee cameo.

The film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams,Tilda Swinton, and Mads MikkelsenDoctor Strange hit theaters on November 4. — A.O.
