We met with successful film and television actor Antonio Jaramillo at Paty’s in Toluca Lake–and great old-style coffee shop that has some sentimental memories for me. Because it has been five years since I’d been there. I shared my story with him and our candid conversation started. Jaramillo talked about his passion for his work and life’s outlook. He’s funny, and you can see the intensity in him. We had a good laugh about us trying to get together for about three years to do this talk.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with this talented guy, here’s a little background; in his mid-20’s, he fell in love with the writings of Anton Chekhov and later Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams. That’s very impressive for someone who spent time in an orphanage.

His love for theater brought him to San Diego in 2004, while working on stage, he received an offer from the prestigious Geffen Playhouse to work in several understudy roles. This prompted him to move to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career.

In 2005, he began to show up on the small screen in shows like Veronica Mars and Charmed. In 2006, he landed a series regular role in the primetime telenovela, Fashion House. This led to several important series regular roles in Days of Our Lives, Meet the Browns, Gang Related, TNT’s 2014 drama Dallas, Devious Maids, and NBC’s hit Shades of Blue with Jennifer Lopez. And many guest roles on hit television shows like Rosewood, Arrested Development, The Mentalist, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and Burn Notice.

Jaramillo’s first movie credit was La Linea (The Line 2009), working with Esai Morales, Danny Trejo, Andy Garcia, and Ray Liotta. His film breakout performance came in 2012 when he co-starred in Oliver Stone’s violent crime thriller, Savages, alongside Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, and Demián Bichir.

Now you can sit back and listen in on our conversation.

Lights Out? No, Stand in the Light!

Maria Bello

I just got a chance to see Lights Out, a new thriller starring Maria Bello, Billy Burke, and Teresa Palmer, and to talk to the stars, director, producers and writer after the screening. I liked the movie a lot, but actually the story about the movie is almost as interesting as the movie.Lights Out movie, Maria Bello, Alexander DiPersia, Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna, Billy Burke, David F. Sandberg, Lotta Losten, Lawrence Grey, Angela Ortíz, Angela María Ortíz S.

Back in 2013, a Swedish couple–director David F. Sandberg and his wife, actress Lotta Losten, made a short film called Lights Out, about a woman who finds herself haunted by a mysterious figure every time she turns off the lights. It caught the attention of a lot of producers in Hollywood, but David and Lotta felt that Lawrence Grey was the one they would really like to work with, and within a year–which is super-fast by Hollywood standards–Grey had placed it with James Wan’s production company, and they completed this feature-length version, directed by Sandberg and starring some well-respected American actors.

The actors talked about their own personal connections to the story: Maria Bello’s own struggles with mental illness, and Teresa Palmer’s experience with her mother’s mental issues as well. It was a connection the actors weren’t even aware of until they were on set, but it made the work even more meaningful to them. I also asked Maria Bello, who has been involved in a lot of special projects, if she was interested in actually directing, and I talked with was interested in directing, since she’s involved in many women’s projects, and I asked Alexander DiPersia, who appears as Palmer’s boyfriend, if he thought he’d be working with Gabriel Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna again soon, as it was good to see Billy Burke, at least at the beginning of the film (he plays Bello’s husband). And both the writer Eric Heisserer and producer Grey if there were any weird (or funny) occurrences on the set of this very spooky movie, and what scared them now or when they were young.

Listen to my conversation with Bello, DiPersia and Palmer, and Grey and Heisserer, and Sandberg and Losten, and see if you don’t agree: the story behind Lights Out is almost as interesting as Lights out itself! — A.O.
