The big summer holiday weekend is upon us and the studios are releasing everything and the kitchen sink to draw us into the theaters. With Tarzan, the newest Purge, Election Year and a new family film, Disney’s The BFG, directed by Steven Spielberg. Which is very fitting on the celebration of Roald Dahl’s 100-year birthday.

Tarzan and The Purge 3 Opens!

Tarzan, The Legend of Tarzan, Margot Robbie, David Yates, Alexander Skarsgård, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz, John Hurt, Djimon Hounsou, Jim Broadbent, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2The Legend of Tarzan
I’ve always been a fan of Tarzan movies and now we have a new one, Warner Bros’ new version of The Legend of Tarzan.

The things that this Tarzan has going for it is, Margot Robbie as Jane. She’s a Jane to champion. And the film is virtually beautiful; it makes you want to visit the Congo.

The actual storyline is weak; there are a few wholes here and there. But for me, the action made up for it.

The film, directed by David Yates (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2), stars Alexander Skarsgård, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz, John Hurt, Djimon Hounsou, and Jim Broadbent.

The Legend of Tarzan in theaters on July 1. — A.O.

The Purge: Election Year, The Purge, Frank Grillo, Elizabeth Mitchell, Joseph Julian Soria, Mykelti Williamson, Edwin Hodge, Betty Gabriel, Liza Colon-Zayas, James DeMonacoThe Purge: Election Year
The Purge franchise is back, with “Election Year,” and this follow up is wilder than previous ones. And even though it wasn’t planned, it’s interesting since we are in a crazy election year. Plus this one has more humor than I expected…but just as scary.

It’s been two years since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) stopped himself from a regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night. Now serving as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), his mission is to protect her in a run for president and survive the annual ritual that targets the poor and innocent.

Other cast members include JJ Soria, Mykelti Williamson, Edwin Hodge, Betty Gabriel, Liza Colón-Zayas, and directed by James DeMonaco.

The Shallows: The Attack is Just the Beginning

The ShallowsThe Shallows has a lot going for it. It is suspenseful, has a little humor, and its fright value works. Blake Lively is pretty good and she was a bit of a badass on a rock with a bird pal called Steven Seagull.

This is the third film of director Jaume Collet-Serra that I’ve watched and enjoyed. It’s no Jaws, but now the new generation has their own. The only thing I would have liked more is if it had ended without the “One Year Later” scene. The film is visually beautiful.

The Shallows stars Óscar Jaenada, and Brett Cullen. The film is in theaters June 24. — A.O.

We got a chance to screen an episode of the new FOX series, The Exorcist. And it was so much more than I expected.

At the little soiree after the screening I got to be part of a conversation with the iconic Geena Davis, who stars in the series along with Alfonso Herrera, who plays a pivotal role as Father Tomas Ortega.
