Rodriguez vs. Cuarón: Open Road Films shifts “Machete Kills” premiere date to the same day as “Gravity”

We’ve known for months that Latino director Robert Rodriguez was bringing his sequel to the bloody-funny action-slammer Machete this summer, starring a half-ton of Latino actors, including Danny Trejo. We’ve also been following the development of Alfonso Cuarón’s impressive new astronauts-in-peril drama, Gravity, starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. Now, in a last-minute slip-and-slide, the release date for Machete Kills has been moved from September 13 to October 4—the same date as the Gravity premiere.

It seems a little odd: the only competition on the September date was the Robert De Niro mob comedy The Family and the sequel to the low-budget horror film Insidious. Now it’s got to stack up against the much higher-profile Cuarón project.

Both should be well worth the time. Watch the trailer for Gravity here, and check out the latest trailer for Machete Kills here.
