Spies + Scrubs = Social Drama: Alexa Vega, Judy Reyes, and Walter Perez are “The Pregnancy Project”

Alexa Vega hasn’t been a kid actor for years; she even appeared as an all-growned-up version of her character, Carmen Cortez, in the recent Spy Kids 4.

And she’s done plenty since then, most recently and notably the popular From Prada to Nada. Now she’s joining with Judy Reyes, once of the long-running sitcom Scrubs, more recently part of the stunning drama Gun Hill Road, in a challenging (and slightly surprising) little Lifetime Movie Network film, The Pregnancy Project.

The movie, premiering on Sunday January 28 at 8P/7C on Lifetime, is based on a real-life memoir by Gaby Rodriguez, a high school student in Washington State who decided to see what it was like to be pregnant and seventeen. With the use of a fake baby bump, she first passed herself of as expecting, suffered with the rejection and changes in attitude…and then revealed the truth and wrote about it all. (You can get a copy of the book, or a Kindle addition, right here, on amazon.com.

Walter Perez is the male lead here–a young actor on the way up who’s already had arcs on The District and Friday Night Lights; he’s guest-starred on high-end series like Off the Map, The Protector, and Chaos, and he’s part of ABC’s big new Amazon-horror series The River, premiering soon. (More on Walter in a future post!).

Meanwhile, Vega isn’t exactly idle. She officially crossed over into cult status when she starred in Repo! The Genetic Opera a couple of years ago; now she’s just finishing shooting a short for Opera director, Darren L. Bousman. (And if you’re a Netflix subscriber, you can watch Repo! Instantly.) You can also catch a chatty catch-up conversation with Alexa and a clip from the movie here on Good Day Los Angeles.
