Kate del Castillo speaks out against human trafficking

Kate del Castillo is one of those rare actresses who is well-recognized on both sides of the border. A prominent star of the Spanish-language La Reina del Sur, she also did a season on Weeds, has appeared on CSI Miami, and was one of the stars of last year’s under-noticed romantic comedy (of a sort), Without Men.

Now del Castillo is putting her celebrity to good use as a spokesperson for the first against human trafficking, by starring in a documentary called Invisible Slaves (Esclavos Invisibles) that will be shown as a series of spots in theaters and aired in its entirety on MTV Latinoamérica. Each of the spots will tell stories of people who were the victims of abuse in Mexico and Guatemala.

The spots are meant to send “a message to a young audience that will be able to see this problem more closely, raising their awareness that this is a serious problem that exists in our society and we should all be alert to spotting it,” organizers said.

“People trafficking affects all of us,” del Castillo told the Latin American Herald Tribune. “There is no doubt about it. It is harming our society every day and will continue to do so as long as we all do not work together to raise awareness, inform and protect the most vulnerable people in Mexico–children, young people and women.”

Andre Royo vs. “The Brady Bunch,” “The Partridge Family,” and…Bigfoot?

You’ll recognized Andre Royo when you see him. This 44-year-old actor, born in New York of a Cuban father, first came to notice as part of the ensemble case of The Wire back in 2008, though he had been working steadily on TV, indies, and shorts for five years before that. After The Wire, you could have spotted him as a guest on a wide range of high-end TV dramas, from Heroes to Numb3rs to Fringe to How to Make It in America. 2011 and 2012 have been particularly busy; Andre’s one of the handful of “black Latinos” who have significant roles in Red Tails, George Lucas’ feature film on the Tuskegee Airmen, and though he has often been cast in African American roles, he’s also played Latino characters like his recent appearance on Prime Suspect. Next stop…well, it’s not George Lucas, but it’s sure to be legendary.

Andre will be co-starring with Danny Bonaduce (The Partridge Family) and Barry Williams (The Brady Bunch) in Bigfoot, one of those gleefully cheesy monster-movie originals that the SyFy Channel produces in endless variety. They’re just completing production in Seattle, with the former child actors squaring off as “life-long rivals who compete to capture Bigfoot.” Veterans of other legendary TV series will be in attendance as well, including Howard Hesseman (WKRP in Cincinnatti) and Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks). And Alice Cooper is along for the ride too (don’t ask us why). Read the rest of this entry »

“Without Men” is a romantic, magical, human comedy…and the victim of mistimed marketing

Gabriela Tagliavini’s lovely and strange new film Without Men has a stellar cast, a fascinating concept, and a surprisingly rich, romantic context…that, even before it’s been seen, is being sadly, completely misunderstood.

Without Men is part of Maya Distributor’s “Seven Movies in Seven Days,” and it had its official opening last Friday in Los Angeles. Eva Longoria, Kate del Castillo, Christian Slater and Oscar Nuñez head a large Read the rest of this entry »

“Without Men” Finally Gets A Date

Good news! We’ve been hearing about Without Men for a long time…and now we’ll finally get to see it. The 15th Annual Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival has just announced that Without Men is one of its upfront features. Just about everybody who’s anybody seems to have touched this film, including Eva Longoria, Kate del Castillo, Maria Conchita Alonso, Oscar Nuñez, Monica Huarte and Yvette Yates.

None of us want to miss it…or anything else at LALIFF. If you’re in the neighborhood of the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood anytime between Sunday, July 17 and Monday July 25…you’re in luck!

And special thanks to the ridiculously beautiful and talented Yvette Yates for the first word on this. She posted it on the Se Fija! Facebook page (and you should be a Fan, too!)
