Thank God for Cable: New Episodes of Half a Dozen Shows Premiere this Monday

The broadcast networks have gone to sleep, but new cable shows with Latinos in the mix are all over the place, especially (for some reason) Monday night.

Constance Marie is the challenged but heroic mom in Switched at Birth, 8P on ABC Family

Carlos Gómez and Kiele Sanchez quip and solve crimes on The Glades, 9P on A&E

Cierra Ramirez and Jake T. Austin are tempestuous twins on Jennifer Lopez new family drama, now Bianca Santos as joined the cast as Lexi Rivera and Alexandra Barreto continues her arc and Norma Maldonado guest stars on The Fosters on ABC Family.

It gets forgotten there sometimes, way down the dial, but Latino heart-throb Tyler Posey is still center stage (although in a non-Latino role) in the cult-fave Teen Wolf. And there’s a new episode this Monday at 10P on MTV.

Nicole Muñoz is part of one of the (many many) ruling families in the post-apocalyptic remains of St. Louis in Defiance, 9P on the SyFy Channel.

Raymond Cruz, Nadine Velazquez, and Jonathan del Arco are all part of the sprawling cast on Major Crimes, TNT’s semi-sequel to The Closer. Catch it at 9P on TNT.

Half a dozen shows all over cable. Who says there’s nothing on? And be sure to DVR what you can; other than Monday, it’s a pretty thin week

Benjamin Bratt, Nadine Velazquez in The Rock’s “Snitch,” Now on DVD

Snitch had some power players like Susan Sarandon and Benjamin Bratt, but The Rock’s (Dwayne Johnson) latest action-effort kind’a fizzled at the box office. Judge it for yourself now that it’s out on DVD this week.

“Major Crimes” Returns with All New Episodes and Raymond Cruz, Monday Night

On LatiNation, hosts Humberto Guida and Gabriela Fresquez sit down with the Latino King of Comedy Paul Rodriguez and catch up with the cast of the web series Fixing Paco. This week’s DVD’s: Latinos Abound

Nadine Velazquez

Salma Hayek

You’ll find Latino entertainment in comedies, thrillers, and more releasing this Tuesday:

Nadine Velazquez plays an all-too-brief but pivotal role in Flight, with Denzel Washington.

Salma Hayek surprises and charms on a date with Kevin James in Here Comes the Boom.

Kevin Alejandro (r)

Kevin Alejandro, Laz Alonso, Yara Martinez, Amaury Nolasco, David Barrera, Maurice Compte, Alyssa Diaz and others are all part of the massive Southland release: The Complete Second, Third and Fourth Seasons, all available today. Some of the episodes were directed by Félix Enríquez Alcalá.

“American Latino” and “LatiNation” are back with new episodes, featuring Chuy Martinez and Nadine Velazquez and more

One–or actually, two–of our favorite magazine shows are back with new episodes for 2013. Media personality Chuy Martinez and L.A. radio DJ Krystal Bee are just two of Valery Ortiz subjects on American Latino, while Humberto Guida and Gabriela Fresquez of LatiNation show us their flexibility skills, as Humberto takes on the Nanda Ninja Acrobats and they both sit down with Nadine Velazquez from The League. Check your local listings for time and channel.

“Snitch” May be the First Big Latino Feature Film of 2013

Benjamin Bratt

A new trailer for Snitch, a pretty serious and intense new thriller starring Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson, was released recently, and it emphasizes the strong Latino presence in the film, including leading roles for Nadine Velazquez, JD Pardo, Richard Cabral and Benjamin Bratt looking about as different from his sleek doctor-role on Private Practice as he possibly could. Release date is February 22, but the story—about a father going undercover for the DEA to free his imprisoned son–is certainly one of the strongest Latino-centric films of the upcoming year (a shame it’s more about Latinos and drugs, but still.)

Take a look at the trailer…

The Mysterious Latinos of “Twilight”

The last installment (finally!) of the five-part trilogy (?) Twilight is about to break upon us, beginning with a first exposure at a multi-hour, multi-theater Twilight Marathon on Thursday night. (The studios did the same thing, to great effect, with the premiere of The Avengers last summer). Most of the attention, quite rightly, has gone to the stars of this love-it-or-hate-it vampire romance, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. However, there are a lot—a lot–of other characters, and character actors, populating this sprawling drama. And some of them are even Latino.

Of course, real-world ethnicity and culture take a back seat to the fantasmagoric “societies” of the vampires and the werewolves in this tribal-warfare war story, be certainly the Denali clan is supposed to look “exotic,” and that has opened the door for a number of Latino (ish) actors to make a few bucks. And when the showcase is a film, or a set of films, that are virtually guaranteed to be seen, at some point or other, by at least half the eyeballs on Planet Earth, why wouldn’t you take a seat at the table (even if it is festooned with viscera).
