“The Single Moms Club,” Smart and Funny in Theaters Today

William Levy, Marlene Forte and Zulay Henao

I have to be honest, I’m not one to run out and see a Tyler Perry movie when it first comes out—but this film, The Single Moms Club, I would recommend.

There are lots of things in this film that I enjoyed, and I was specially impressed when the Latino characters spoke in Spanish and there were no subtitles. It just felt normal.

Eddie Cibrian

Perry put together the perfect cast—Zulay Henao, Eddie Cibrian, William Levy, Marlene Forte (Dallas), Nia Long, Cocoa Brown, Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs), Amy Smart, Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Tyler Perry himself.

At a press conference for the film, Zulay (Esperanza) Henao thanked Tyler Perry for paring her with William Levy. She said she now has so many newfound girlfriends from high school, and even elementary school, that she didn’t know she had, Including new twitter and Instagram followers.

On the question of what she learned from working on this film, Zulay said, “Doing this film for me was really beautiful because I found myself going back to times in my childhood where I maybe didn’t appreciate my mom as much as I thought I did. Now as an adult woman, I can go back and relive some of the experiences with her. I have so much respect for her sacrifices, her working her three jobs. I understand me more as a child now, because I was too rebellious when my parents divorced. So there was a moment where I was really able to reflect. It was very therapeutic, it was nice.”

The main female characters are smart and come from different ethnicities and backgrounds. There’s no male bashing, as the title would make you assume. It’s funny, warm and in many ways, real.
